15 - HOW TO SELECT A MONTESSORI PRESCHOOL

$8.00

For the parent of a preschool child, it is not easy to select a school that meets all the requirements one might have in mind. Children are born with their own personality and anyone who has more than one child knows that no two children are alike.  Differences are intrinsic aspects of all individuals and all individuals may not have exactly the same needs.  Some children are social and extroverted, some are shy and introverted.  Not all children will walk into a classroom and feel at home right away.  Dr. Montessori understood this fact of life and the first principle on which her method of education is founded is precisely the principle which respects one’s unique individual needs and aptitudes.  She observed that the traditional daycare and kindergarten program is a regimented approach, where children are grouped by the same age and treated, not as individuals, but collectively.  Thus, a classroom composed of children of the same age requires that all children work at the same task at the same time, that all children pay attention to lessons in a teacher-centered environment in a collective method of education. Therefore, grouping children by the same age would not meet the first requirement of a Montessori preschool class.
